Frequently Asked Questions

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a type of cyberattack where criminals pretend to be a trusted person or organization to trick you into giving up sensitive information. This can include usernames, passwords, financial details, or clicking malicious links.

Phishing attempts often come through:

  • Email
  • Text messages (SMS)
  • Phone Calls
  • Fake websites or file-sharing links (including OneDrive or SharePoint)

These messages may look urgent, claim there’s a problem with your account, or ask you to take immediate action. When in doubt, don’t click—report it to the RTC Service Desk.

How Do I Know if a Message is Dangerous?

A message may be dangerous if it shows one or more of the following warning signs:

  • Creates urgency or fear
Messages that say things like “Act now,” “Your account will be locked,” or “Immediate action required.”
  • Asks for sensitive information
Requests for passwords, verification codes, personal details, or payment information.
  • Contains unexpected links or attachments
Especially if you weren’t expecting the message or don’t recognize the sender.
  • Has a suspicious sender address
The name may look familiar, but the email address doesn’t match the organization.
  • Includes spelling or grammar errors
Many phishing messages contain unusual wording or mistakes.
  • Feels “off”
If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts.

If you’re unsure, don’t click or reply. Report the message to the RTC Service Desk so it can be investigated and others can be protected.
